A high school student attended our meeting and was introduced by Ward Phillips; she is part of a group fundraising to give money to people suffering from lymphoma and other cancers. We passed the bucket and proceeds went to her efforts. Our Rotary Club presented a $5,000 check to Safe Families.

 

Our speaker was Abigail Martin, who is Alice in Dairyland this year. Abigail grew up on a dairy farm near Milton. She was active as a youth in 4H and in FFA, she showed cows at the county and state fair. One of her first jobs after high school was at Babcock Hall (UW-Madison) making cheese. The Alice in Dairyland program started in 1948 as a beauty pageant. It has since become a full-time, yearlong position as a public relations professional. One in nine jobs in Wisconsin work in the agriculture industry. Abigail drives an E85 vehicle, sponsored by the Corn Grower’s Association, and puts on close to 40,000 miles driving to engagements around the state. She has done many TV and radio interviews, she was at the State Fair for all eleven days, and the World Dairy Expo in Madison. She has worked with the ‘Something Special from Wisconsin’ program that encourages people to choose local products. Wisconsin leads the nation in production of cranberries, ginseng, mink pelts and dairy and goat cheese. This May, the 73^rd Alice in Dairyland will be crowned in Walworth County, our first time hosting the event. Our Club presented a check for $250 to Abigail for the Alice in Dairyland program.
